SIGNIFICANT ESTATE, GIFT, AND INCOME TAX CHANGES PROPOSED UNDER THE “BUILD BACK BETTER ACT”

On September 13, 2021, the House Ways and Means Committee released a proposed tax bill (House proposal) as part of the Biden administration’s “Build Back Better Act.” The segments of the proposed bill discussed below highlight important changes to the way trusts, estates, and individuals could be taxed. However, it is important to note that this proposed legislation is likely to change (perhaps substantively) before it is finally passed into law.

Thomas Reske

Thomas Reske is an Associate Attorney in Duggan Bertsch’s Taxation Group. He regularly advises and assists clients with their diverse federal and state tax compliance needs. Thomas also has significant experience representing clients facing disputes and audits with the IRS and the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR). In addition to his experience in taxation, Thomas also drafts and reviews a diverse range of business agreements for sole proprietors, partnerships, and limited liability companies. 

Thomas regularly collaborates and works with other attorneys to find optimal tax solutions for the firm’s clients. This often requires comprehensive research and analysis of the Internal Revenue Code, Treasury regulations, and frequently shifting legal landscape. 

Prior to working at Duggan Bertsch, Thomas worked for a boutique Chicago-area law firm where he assisted clients with their tax and estate planning needs. 

Thomas graduated from Indiana University Maurer School of Law in 2015. He is admitted to practice law in the state of Illinois. 

In his free time, Thomas serves on the associate board of Ladder Up, a nonprofit organization that provides financial and tax assistance to the communities of Chicago.  He is also an active member of both the Illinois and Chicago Bar Associations.
